You don't have to rely on expensive gardening supplies for your vegetable and flower gardens. There are plenty of homemade, reliable, and biodegradable solutions you can make yourself to help rid your garden of pests and weeds, while helping it grow lush and full of fresh produce. Here are some DIY tips for gardening that will help you save money and grow more plants, too!

Labor Saving Advice - Tired of going back and forth between the garage or shed to get another tool? Have you considered a pull cart? Many home gardeners are using a new lightwieght, portable cart that holds all their gardening tools and hoses. One company, Utilicart.com has designed a lightweight, foldable version that can hold up to 100 pounds. Check them out.

Preventing and Controlling Weeds

Boiling Water - You can kill just about any particularly pesky weed with a big dose of boiling water. This is especially helpful in cracks in sidewalks or driveways. Just heat water in a teakettle, and pour the boiling water directly at the base of the plant, so it works its way into the roots. In two or three days, the weed will die and you can easily remove it.

Vinegar - The acid in vinegar is a natural weed killer, too. You can apply vinegar directly to the base of the weed, and it will die in two or three days. Use regular, straight vinegar, not flavored vinegars like apple cider vinegar. Don't spray vinegar on plants you want to keep, like grass or vegetables, because it will kill those, too.

Mulch - covering your garden soil with mulch can help keep down weeds throughout the garden, too.

DIY Tips for Gardening Pesticides

Soapy Oil Spray - This works on insects with soft bodies, like aphids, mealybugs, and mites. Mix a few drops of Ivory soap (the purest soap) and 2 Tablespoon Canola oil in a quart of water. Pour into a spray bottle and shake well. Spray the top and bottom of the leaves of the infected plant, and allow to dry.

Hot Pepper Spray - This works on mites and many other insects. Mix 2 Tablespoons of cayenne pepper or hot pepper sauce a few drops of Ivory soap in a quart of water. Pour into a spray bottle and let stand overnight. Shake well, and spray on the top and bottom of the leaves of the infected plant. Shake the bottle often as you spray.

Beneficial Insects - Many common garden insects, like ladybugs, praying mantis, and lacewings are all very beneficial to the garden. They eat a variety of insect pests like aphids, caterpillars, and mites, and they are often recommended as an alternative to chemical pesticides in pest infestations. Many garden centers sell ladybugs or praying mantis eggs that you can release in your garden.

Fertilizer

Compost - One of the best and easiest DIY tips for gardening is starting your own compost pile. Once the compost is ready, you can use it to enrich your garden soil, which helps act as a fertilizer or nutrients for your plants and flowers.

Manure - If you're lucky enough to have access to horse, chicken, or pig manure, you have a wonderful fertilizer for your garden. Mix the manure into the soil regularly, and your plants and flowers will become plusher and more productive.

Follow these DIY tips for gardening to create a beautiful garden that can give you fresh, natural produce throughout the growing season, too!
